Mercia Frazer’s son, Mario Deane, was fatally beaten in Montego Bay police custody on August 3, 2014. She has been waging a fight for justice through Jamaica’s courts and bureaucracy for more than six years.
This summer she saw the first judgements in her son’s death. Yet the mentally ill men who were convicted of Deane’s manslaughter have maintained their innocence. For Mercia Frazer, their convictions brought little consolation in her ongoing search for truth.
JFJ spoke with Ms. Frazer on August 2nd, the day before her annual protest outside the police station where her son last spoke with her on the phone, before he was returned to lock-up.
